Original Atlas MD5 head, stripped

  • Original Atlas MD5 head, stripped. Catalogue 1
  • These two components are shown in photograph P3 of Eric Dunstan's PhD thesis (1962) with the caption "Block Head - Component Parts" The photograph is described on p99:
"Each head block is assembled from two complementary but otherwise identical halves A-A shown in photograph P3. Each half contains 18 ferrite inserts of the type shown at B having associated coils of 50 turns connected to pairs of contacts on an 18 way double sided printed circuit associated with each block.
The ferrite inserts complete with coil are araldited in place as shown at C in photograph P3 and the surface D of the half block is then surface ground. An additional rebate of 0.001 in. is ground along the length of the block but only in the vicinity of the front pole tip. The halves are araldited together so that the rebated sections form the required head gap of 0.002 in.; accurate alignment is assured by using spigots in conjunction with suitable location holes"
See plate S383 for the assembled head block.
